The Scrutton Bland Approach:Internal audit at Scrutton Bland starts with the areas of highest risk. This is established from the risk register or from our own assessment of risk, following detailed discussions with management. This determines the audit needs assessment, which highlights those areas where we will concentrate our work. Our work covers operational and financial areas of risk. We believe in consensus, not confrontation. By this we mean that it is important to seek a consensus with management for any actions that are needed. Our collaborative approach is to aim to make best use of the depth of knowledge and experience of the client management team with whom we are working. This is far preferable to a confrontational approach of internal auditors trying to pitch themselves against management.

Our Internal Audit Department is made up of skilled internal audit professionals. We do not consider Internal Audit work can be conducted without the use of staff who are engaged full-time in Internal Audit work. We use an established methodology as the basis for our internal audit work, which is compliant with Government Internal Audit Standards and also with best practice, as set out by the Institute of Internal Audit. We seek to evolve this methodology so that it remains relevant: the concept of good Governance is rapidly changing in the world of commerce and in the not-for-profit sectors. Internal audit is one of the key components for ensuring good governance.
Making the difference
Scrutton Bland believes that the main role of a modern Internal Audit Service is to assist with the management of risk, which involves all areas of risk in any organisation, not solely the financial risks. Traditionally, far too many internal audit providers have focused virtually all of their efforts on financial areas alone. This has arisen as many internal auditors have come from an external audit environment and have approached the work with the false belief that the main purpose of internal audit is to bolster the work of the external auditors.
