Jason Fayers, Managing Partner

Jason took over as Managing Partner of the firm in 2017 and combines this with being one of our tax partners. He specialises in all aspects of business and corporate taxation. He joined the firm in 1998 from the Inland Revenue where he had spent the previous ten years working as an Inspector of Taxes. His extensive experience in dealing with Inland Revenue enquiries has allowed him to advise many clients on managing their tax liabilities successfully. Jason heads our Tax Department in both of our Ipswich and Colchester offices which, in addition to providing personal, business and corporate tax compliance, planning and advice also includes the provision of payroll services, PAYE compliance support and remuneration planning services.

Tim Mulley, Senior Partner

Tim joined Scrutton Bland in 1990 having previously been an underwriter with a leading UK insurer.  Tim is Senior Partner and also heads up our Insurance Broking business with Dan Bligh. The insurance client portfolio is made up of mainly owner managed businesses and private clients but in recent years has developed a specialism in providing insurance solutions for charities.

Nick Banks, Business Advisory & Cloud Accounting Partner

Nick joined Scrutton Bland in 1993 and trained with the firm until qualification.  Appointed a Partner in April 2004, Nick is one of our two Partners who lead the Ipswich based Business Advisory Team looking after a wide and varied portfolio. Nick specialises in advising owner managed and family businesses, professional partnerships and farming clients. He is the firm’s Finance Partner and a member of our Independent Financial Planning division’s senior leadership team. Nick is a trustee of St Elizabeth's Hospice and is also treasurer of Ipswich Sports Club. He is the Independent Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership.

Gavin Birchall, Tax Partner

Gavin is one of our Tax Partners in our Colchester office. Before joining Scrutton Bland, Gavin worked as a solicitor for over 14 years at a number of large regional law firms.

One of his particular areas of expertise is property and land taxation including Stamp Duty Land Tax, VAT, Capital Gains Tax, the Construction Industry Scheme and Inheritance Tax related reliefs such as Business Property Relief and Agricultural Property Relief and has acted for developers, charities, property investment companies and individual landowners across Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. Gavin is a member of the Stamp Taxes Practitioners Group which is a forum for practitioners who specialise in Stamp Duty and Stamp Duty Land Tax. Gavin also provides advice to family owned businesses and owner managed businesses on succession planning, business reorganisations, and tax efficient means of incentivising key employees. Gavin is a non practising solicitor within Scrutton Bland.

Dan Bligh, Insurance Joint Managing Director

Dan joined Scrutton Bland in 2004 as a Commercial Account Handler, which involved dealing with all aspects of existing business. He then became a Senior Commercial Account Executive, running a portfolio of business and handling new business enquiries, including commercial combined, fleet, liability, property, engineering and various other areas of insurance.  Alongside Tim Mulley, Dan is one of Scrutton Bland Insurance Broker Ltd's Joint Managing Directors. He remains actively involved in assisting new and existing clients with their diverse insurance needs.  Dan's knowledge of the market and professional approach ensures competitive terms with established insurers.

Grant Buchanan, Financial Planning Joint Managing Director

Having joined the firm in 2008 and based in the Colchester office, Grant is now one of our Joint Financial Planning Directors and advises on wealth management for a number of high net worth individuals with investment portfolios whilst also planning to mitigate income tax and capital gains tax liabilities where possible.  Helping clients to preserve wealth is also fundamental to the work Grant does and this can involve setting up trusts and using other financial solutions to mitigate inheritance tax.  Grant also has a specialism in helping clients to generate income in retirement from pensions and other assets.

Graham Doubtfire, Private Client Tax Partner

Graham is one of our Private Client Tax Partners working from our Colchester office, who brings extensive experience in dealing with the tax affairs of high net worth individuals and their families to the firm. His wealth of knowledge is used to assist clients in mitigating their exposure to income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax. Graham is particularly keen to work with Scrutton Bland’s financial services team whose work compliments the tax planning advice team to provide an integrated planning service.

Graham is tasked with leading Scrutton Bland’s strategic approach to the government’s electronic taxation initiative, Making Tax Digital. With his in-depth knowledge of both tax and accounting software, Graham is uniquely placed to assist clients with both Making Tax Digital as well as cloud accounting systems, showing them how these can be used to streamline their financial processes and benefit them in planning their tax liabilities. Graham qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1998 and as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2000.

Paul Goddard, Risk and Assurance Partner

Paul Goddard has been with Scrutton Bland since 2001 and has a large portfolio of Internal Audit contracts.
Paul has a broad experience in working with a range of clients, including the public sector, education, and charities as well as commercial organisations. He specialises in providing targeted assurance advice to clients of all sizes, enabling them to embed risk management and develop robust governance frameworks to deliver the organisations’ objectives efficiently, effectively and economically. Paul works from our Ipswich office and regularly travels across the country to support and advise clients throughout the UK.

Sharon Gravener, Corporate Services Partner

Sharon has been with Scrutton Bland for 30 years and is a partner in our Corporate Services Department based in Ipswich. She specialises in providing services to larger owner managed businesses, professional partnerships and charities.  She feels that her years of experience in practice and of previously managing the firm give her a great deal of empathy with her clients accounting, tax and business issues. 

As part of the team delivering services to Higher Education and Further Education colleges, Sharon has an expertise in internal audit services, providing these to clients across the whole of East Anglia.

Sue Gull, Corporate Services Partner

Sue joined Scrutton Bland as a partner in February 2001 and jointly heads our Corporate Services practice in Ipswich.  Sue serves a number of our larger clients, which range from substantial privately-owned businesses to subsidiaries of international companies. As well as audit and accountancy services, she has experience in advising shareholders and their families on a broad range of issues to help them plan for the future, including valuations, exit strategies, group structures and financial reporting. Working with our other departments is key to Sue’s role, as it has never been more important to ensure all aspects of our clients’ affairs are considered, from corporate and personal tax to advancing technology in business systems. Sue has a particular interest in the construction industry, which has many specific tax and accounting issues.

Faye Howard, Private Client Tax Partner

Faye is a Private Client Tax Partner based in our Ipswich office.  Having qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2004, she joined Scrutton Bland in 2014 as a Private Client Tax Director to work with the firm’s high net worth individuals, and business owners, to ensure that they make the most of the various tax reliefs which might be available to them. 
As head of the firm’s Private Client Service, a key part of Faye’s role is to ensure that an overall strategy can be implemented to achieve the client's financial goals, and this involves working closely with other professionals such as Independent Financial Advisers and Solicitors, to provide joined up advice to our clients and help to build a team of trusted advisers around them and their families.  As a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), Faye is also very well placed to provide advice on planning to mitigate capital taxes such as Capital Gains Tax, and Inheritance Tax, particularly with the use of Trusts.

Luke Morris, Corporate Finance Partner

Luke joined Scrutton Bland in 2017 to head up the firm’s Corporate Finance offering and develop its already well established advisory arm – a practice assisting entrepreneurs to buy, sell, refinance, reorganise and value their businesses.

He studied at King’s College, Cambridge, and went on to qualify with PricewaterhouseCoopers, spending six years with their East Anglian practice. Luke  then relocated to the Middle East with Ernst & Young, leading a diverse corporate client practice, and spending a year seconded to the Central Bank of Kuwait after the 2008 crisis. He then worked for a year in Canada and the USA with EY, mainly being involved in large scale IFRS conversion projects.

On returning to the UK he spent five years as partner with a smaller firm based in the East of England, delivering accounting, financial reporting, audit, corporate governance, corporate finance and transaction support services to a range of clients including listed companies and complex international groups.

Luke is  proud to serve as one of the region’s ICAEW’s (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) Ambassadors, a role which sees him bringing together and representing members of the profession. He is a passionate advocate for trade, enterprise, job and wealth creation in the East of England and a frequent speaker and media commentator.

Tim O'Connor, Corporate Services Partner

Tim O’Connor has been with Scrutton Bland since the start of 2002 and a partner since April 2004. He is one of the corporate accounting partners in the Colchester office. As a corporate partner Tim deals with a number of medium sized businesses, together with a specialism in the education and not-for-profit sectors. Tim also has the pleasure of dealing with a number of professional practices within East Anglia. Tim has also been involved in a number of corporate finance transactions and is always keen to explore new areas of specialism that may be of benefit to the group’s client base. Tim is focused on gaining a clear understanding of the business and its owners so that he can provide tailored advice and planning in addition to a high quality compliance service. Tim has been in practice since the late eighties having trained first in general practice in Romford before specialising in audit and corporate work at a medium sized firm in Norwich.

Simon Pinion, Business Advisory & Cloud Accounting Partner

Joining Scrutton Bland in 2012, Simon has been working in practice for over 30 years. He leads the business advisory team in the firm’s Colchester office, running a varied client portfolio, and specialises in advising owner-managed businesses. As well as helping clients deal with a diverse range of compliance issues, he and his team work closely with them to gain a greater financial understanding of their business, assist with business planning and produce regular management information.  Simon has a particular interest in the tech sector, with a specific expertise in helping businesses deal with IT issues, particularly the selection, introduction and use of e-commerce solutions through Scrutton Bland’s Systems Advisory Service. He was instrumental developing Scrutton Bland’s original cloud-based accounting solution, recognising that it would become a fundamental component in a modern financial practice. Outside of business hours Simon currently acts as treasurer to the Winsley’s Charity, providing Almshouse accommodation in Colchester.

James Tucker, Business Advisory & Cloud Accounting Partner

James joined Scrutton Bland in Ipswich in 2014 after three years as group finance director of a large group of companies; interests in property, manufacturing and technology. He qualified as an accountant with a large regional firm in Norfolk. He became a partner in 2006 and subsequently moved to Suffolk. James advises a variety of different businesses with particular expertise in the agricultural, land & property and tech sectors. He enjoys helping SMEs to grow, develop and achieve their financial objectives and using his industry experience to provide tailor-made advice.
