Owl things considered – Scrutton Bland’s Big Hoot design is taking shape

10 March 2022 - Elizabeth Nichols

The owl sculptures for the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 art trail are starting to develop their distinctive designs.

Scrutton Bland are one of the sponsors of the owl-based Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 art trail to take place around Ipswich later this year, and their top-secret design is certainly going to attract some attention when it goes on display this summer.

Elizabeth O’Hanlon, Head of Marketing has been instrumental in helping to choose Scrutton Bland’s unique owl sculpture which will sit (or perch) outside their offices on Crown Street in the centre of Ipswich. “We are looking forward to being part of this great event, which raises so much for St Elizabeth Hospice,” says Elizabeth. “The Scrutton Bland owl is going to be one of the most colourful on the trail, and we think the design we’ve chosen is going to be a very appropriate theme for Suffolk.”

Scrutton Bland commissioned the sculpture from Yorkshire-based artist Cathy Simpson, who has a special connection to the Big Hoot job. “This project is particularly poignant for me, as an old school friend recently passed away having spent her final days in the care of St Elizabeth’s Hospice,” Cathy says. “I’m glad to be able to do something to promote the hospice, and it also feels like a kind of celebration of her.”

Of course, everyone wants to know what the sculptures will look like, but Scrutton Bland, along with all the other sponsors, are keeping very quiet about what the theme of their sculpture will be. Managing partner Jason Fayers said: “It’s a vibrant and eyecatching design which ties in with our business philosophy of growth and the rewards of hard work, as well as our love of nature. I can’t say any more than that!”

The fifty owls on the Big Hoot trail will be placed around Ipswich on a family-friendly discovery trail this summer. There will also be lots of Little Hoot owls which have been designed by local schools and groups. Organised by event management company Wild In Art, the Big Hoot trail aims to connect businesses, artists and communities through experiencing art in non-traditional settings, as well as raising much needed funds for charitable causes.

Liz Baldwin, Corporate and Sponsorship Fundraising Manager at St Elizabeth Hospice noted: “The Big Hoot 2022 is shaping up to be a brilliantly creative and colourful event for Ipswich and the local area, and we cannot wait for everyone to join with the hospice and enjoy the work of our fantastic artists. We’re thrilled that Scrutton Bland are involved and will be supporting St Elizabeth Hospice through their sponsorship of an owl sculpture – hoot have thought it would be so much fun to support your local hospice?”
