Fields of Opportunities in a Climate of Change: The 2026 Farming Conference

12 November 2025 - Nick Banks

The Farming Conference returns to Trinity Park, Ipswich on Wednesday 28 January 2026. Organised by Fram Farmers, Suffolk Agricultural Association & Scrutton Bland, this year’s theme is – Fields of Opportunities in a Climate of Change.

Headline speaker Professor David Hughes, Emeritus Professor of Food Marketing at Imperial College London, will open the day by examining how shifting consumer behaviour and global retail trends will affect UK farmers. From there, sessions will dive into five major themes:

Climate

The 10 hottest years on record in the UK have all occurred since 2002 (Met Office). What varieties will you be drilling to protect yield against hotter, drier seasons? We’ll be tackling this in the climate session.

Natural Capital

UK farmland delivers £1.5bn worth of “ecosystem services” every year (DEFRA). How can farmers turn natural capital into practical returns? Case studies and discussion will feature in the natural capital session.

Renewables

Electricity and fuel now account for up to 15 percent of variable costs on some UK arable farms (AHDB). Could renewables reduce costs and create new income? Options and opportunities will be examined at the conference.

Vertical Integration

UK direct to consumer food sales grew 42% between 2019 and 2022 (NFU and DEFRA). Is there an opportunity to add value and boost margins beyond the commodity market? Hear from farmers who have done it.

Machinery & Labour Sharing

In East Anglia there is an estimated 30 to 40 percent excess combine capacity (Fram Farmers). With new combines costing £500,000 or more, does every farm really need its own? Join the discussion in the machinery sharing session.

Guided by Bill Baker, Suffolk Agricultural Association Chairman, the programme takes delegates on a virtual farm walk through farming’s new directions. The 2026 event promises to be a day of straight-talking discussion, technical expertise, and farmer-led experience. Building on the momentum of the 2024 conference, which welcomed more than 300 delegates and made headlines with its frank debate on how farmers can “thrive, not just survive.”
